Thalma de Freitas
Thalma de Freitas
Thalma de Freitas is a pioneer actress of color in the era of Afrocentric affirmation in Brazil, having performed in the theater and in over 15 telenovelas at Rede Globo. As a singer, she is one of the most prominent voices of her generation and continues to grow the legacy of her father, pianist and maestro Laércio de Freitas. DeFreitas smooth silky mezzo alto and charismatic performances were, for over a decade, a highlight of the big band Orquestra Imperial. Her songwriting and vision have led to a wide variety of collaborations with both contemporary and legendary musicians, such as João Donato, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Céu, Anelis Assumpção, Tulipa Ruiz, Felipe Catto, Quantic, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kamasi Washington and Moses Sumney. Living in Los Angeles since 2012, Thalma has been invited to perform her charismatic SambaJazz in venues like Blue Whale, Grand Performances, ArtPower at UCSD, Skirball Center, Union Station and UCLA's Royce Hall. She is married to hip-hop photographer Brian ‘B+’ Cross, co-founder of Mochilla, and founded its sister-brand, the Brazilla Music Collective.
Bloco Obini
Bloco Obini is an all Queens drum ensemble founded by percussionist virtuoso Kahlil Cummings. Using art to speak to the times, Bloco Obini performs Afro Brazilian bloco drumming, with uplifting songs affirming that we are all royalty, and come from Kings and Queens. Bloco Obini represents the empowerment of not only women, but an entire generation, using the drum as a spiritual weapon to heal and educate, serving communities locally and abroad.
