Vernon Reid's Band of Gypsys Revisted Band
Recorded live at The Fillmore East in New York City N.Y. on December 31st,
1969 & January 1st, 1970, the Band of Gypsys debut recording consisted of
six tracks released to the public on March 25th, 1970—close to fifty years
ago. That vinyl record established the template for the Funk & Roll genre.

The re-releases, with new tracks & multiple versions of the six tracks
from the Fillmore shows, illuminated that Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox, and
Buddy Miles never played a tune the same way twice, breaking away from the
“note-by-note” live renditions prevalent in Pop & Rock hit songs at that
time. This “breaking away” also highlighted BOG’s use of improvisational
interplay within the Pop/Rock song structure, which, up to that time, had
usually been exercised by Jazz musicians.

the legacy of Jimi Hendrix on the occasion of the late guitar icon’s 76th

As the lead guitarist and founder of Living Colour and a co-founder of
the Black Rock Coalition, the London-born, Brooklyn-raised Reid stepped
into the void left by Hendrix’s tragic death in 1970 at the age of 27.
Drawn to jazz as a teenager, he first gained notice in the early 1980s as
a member of Ornette Coleman Prime Time and drummer Ronald Shannon
Jackson's Decoding Society.

Band of Gypsies Revisited extends the music of Hendrix’s most
jazz-oriented band, and Reid has assembled a prodigious quartet drawn
mostly from the soul-jazz-hip-hop collective Burnt Sugar Arkestra for this
one time visit to the West coast. The group includes drummer/vocalist
James “Biscuit” Rouse, who spent three years as music director for Lauryn
Hill, bassist/vocalist Jared Michael Nickerson, who’s toured and recorded
with Charlie Musselwhite and The The and guitarist/vocalist André “Dré
Glo” Lassalle, a longtime Reid collaborator whose credits include work
with Miles Davis and John Scofield.

Van Hunt
Van Hunt, a Dayton, Ohio-born musician, made his way to Atlanta where
he drew acclaim for his production efforts and crafty songwriting,
featured on recordings by such diverse artists as Dionne Farris, Rahsaan
Patterson, and Cree Summer as well as the platinum-selling
soundtrack, Love Jones. His own self-titled debut album arrived in 2004,
instantly establishing Hunt as a distinctive and original talent with its
idiosyncratic melding of R&B, soul, funk, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll.

In 2007, Hunt received a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Performance By A
Duo Or Group With Vocals,” honoring Family Affair, a collaboration
with John Legend and Joss Stone found on the 2006 Sly & The Family Stone
tribute album, Different Strokes For Different Folks.
A charismatic and engaging live performer, Hunt has also attracted
critical praise touring both as headliner as well as alongside such
diverse acts as Kanye West, The Roots, Coldplay, Mary J. Blige, and Dave
Matthews Band.

Van Hunt’s fifth album, The Fun Rises, The Fun Sets., was released on May
5, 2015. Inspired by the music of The Delfonics, Parliament-Funkadelic,
Pink Floyd, and Billie Holiday, the album chronicles love, loss, and
nostalgia through the sounds of original funk and old soul. The Boston
Globe says Hunt “…achieves the kind of heated, raw sound that has
virtually disappeared in too much of today’s overly manicured R&B.” and,
“…Hunt, never loses sight of the past as he progressively forges his own
way forward.”

The show at Zebulon will be his first in six years.
Black Rock Coalition
The Black Rock Coalition (BRC) represents a united front of musically and
politically progressive Black artists and supporters.

The BRC was created in the fall of 1985 in New York City with the purpose
of creating an atmosphere conducive to the maximum development, exposure
and acceptance of Black alternative music. The BRC seeks to foster
cooperation among musicians and like organizations through networking and
shared resources. The BRC opposes those racist and reactionary forces
within the American music industry which undermine and purloin our musical
legacy and deny Black artists the expressive freedom and economic rewards
that our Caucasian counterparts enjoy as a matter of course.

Rock and roll, like practically every form of popular music across the
globe, is Black music and we are its heirs. We, too, claim the right of
creative freedom and access to American and International airwaves,
audiences, markets, resources and compensations, irrespective of genre.

The BRC embraces the total spectrum of Black music. The BRC rejects the
arcane perceptions and spurious demographics that claim our appeal is
limited. The BRC rejects the demand for Black artists to tailor their
music to fit into the creative straitjackets the industry has designed. We
are individuals and will accept no less than full respect for our right to
be conceptually independent.
