The Renderers
The Renderers
Described as deep, dark and psychedelic, the Renderers music ranges from wild and raging to dream-like and spooky, and features husband and wife Brian and Maryrose Crook with various lineups. The Crooks have supported such artists as Joanna Newsom and Bill Callahan, with whom they played theatre shows as a duo; to Bonnie Prince Billy, who toured New Zealand with The Renderers as his backing band. In 1996, when the Crooks toured the US for the first time, they played a packed New York bar supporting Thurston Moore playing with his group Male Slut.
They have released nine albums on labels from both New Zealand (Flying Nun, Tinsel Ears) and the US (Ba Da Bing, Grapefruit, Meds, Siltbreeze, Last Visible Dog, Ajax Records, 3 Beads of Sweat and Merge,) and have played extensively in both countries.
“Rocket Into Nothing” review: Washington Post 2012
: “Part Velvets, part Mekons, part unalloyed, indescribable weirdness.”
“Monsters and Miasmas” Review: Thurston Moore, Bull Tongue. “dark, original and deep....”
Bonnie Prince Billy, 2011:
“I had the supreme good fortune to collaborate with the Renderers, playing music up and down New Zealand. This was a rich and rewarding venture from which I continue to reap benefits of inspiration.”
In The Sodium Light, 2015
“apocalypse and dread”, Magnet Magazine, the best of 2016, Essential Music) “They invite you right inside the emotional engine room, giving an opportunity to witness their raga-psychedelic psychosis up close.”
